Title: Desert Gem
Theme: Hidden Gems

This design is very close to my heart as it mirrors my current life working FIFO (Fly in Fly out on a mine site in Pilbara).

Western Australia has so many hidden gems! During my night shift work, I discovered one of Pilbara’s hidden treasures. I was walking on the red dirt and suddenly found myself being surround ed by little sparkling crystals. It was a magical experience. I bent over to pick one to have a closer look but I realised that these weren’t crystal stones. In fact, I was actually looking into the eyes of tiny spiders. My head light was creating a reflection on their eyes which sparkled and looked exactly like gems!

On the one hand, I experience the red dirt, working in a remote area and the challenge of focusing on the beauty around you and see the bright side of things. On the other hand, in my time off back home in Perth, the beautiful ocean and the beach with another well-hidden secret that you will only discover if you look close, very close! The Maratus Speciosus (our dancing peacock spider). A stunning creature so colourful and extraordinary.

Life has many challenges but seeing the beauty in things is what keeps you going when times get tough.

There’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too clever, I only let him out at night sometimes when everybody’s asleep.

I say, I know that you’re there, so don’t be sad. Then I put him back, but he’s singing a little in there, I haven’t quite let him die and we sleep together like that with our secret pact … – Charles Bukowski

The Birds and the Bees

The Rainbow Bee-Eater asked a Bee.
“You work so hard to make honey and people steal, don’t you feel bad?”
The Bee answers calm:
“I don’t feel bad as they can never steal my art of making honey”.
